Joaquim Jorge Carvalho
Born in Coimbra on April 15, 1963. He holds degrees in Modern Languages and Literatures – French and English variant, and in Modern Languages and Literatures – Portuguese and English variant, both from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra; a Master's degree in Portuguese Studies from the Open University; and a PhD in Portuguese Literature from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra.
He is a Portuguese and French teacher at the Arco de Baúlhe Basic School (Cabeceiras de Basto School Group).
To date, he has published the following works: Disappointments of the Days (poetry), Those who run for pleasure, not for what? (novel), The Orange Depression – Fables from the countryside and the urban periphery (novel), The Name of Light (novel), The Book of Business, Riddles, and Proverbs (romance), The Sad Employee (novel), The Circular House (novel), Boats' Restlessness (poetry), The Word is Worth It (poetry), A Boat Called Sophia Loren (novel), Family History (short story) and Júlio Dinis: The Pupils of the Writer (abridged version of the doctoral dissertation she completed in 2011 for the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, entitled Action, Scenes, and Characters in Dinis's Narrative: The Pupils of the Lord Writer).
He is also the author of a Portuguese Language manual for CEF (Education and Training Courses), published by Porto Editora. In the context of his literary activity, he obtained – among other distinctions – 1st place in the Cesário Verde National Poetry Competition – Revelation (Oeiras, 1995); 1st place in the SPRC Short Story Literary Competition (Coimbra, 1993 and 2001); 1st place in the Branquinho da Fonseca Literary Prize – Fiction (Cascais, 1997); 1st place in the CGTP Short Story Literary Prize (Lisbon, 2009); 1st place in the Francisco Álvares de Nóbrega Storytelling Literary Prize (Machico, 2008); 1st place in the Francisco Álvares de Nóbrega Poetry Literary Prize (Machico, 2010).
