João Poole da Costa nasceu em Lisboa, onde se formou e trabalhou em Engenharia civil. Foi muitos anos consultor internacional em projectos e construção de barragens no Brasil e no Peru. Mais recentemente, leccionou na Universidade Nova de Lisboa como Professor Associado Convidado. Viajou desde cedo por vários países onde, em paralelo, com a sua actividade profissional, se interessou pela história e pelos costumes e cultura dos povos que conheceu.
