Nascido em 1951, licenciou-se em Física na Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa. Doutorou-se em Física, especialidade de Física da Matéria Condensada, na Universidade Nova de Lisboa, no seguimento de uma investigação em Ressonância Magnética Nuclear de Polímeros Líquidos Cristalinos, realizada em Grenoble. Tem desenvolvido investigação em reologia de cristais líquidos, poliméricos e de baixo peso molecular, e acerca do efeito de campos aplicados, magnéticos ou elétricos, sobre a estabilidade do escoamento da fase nemática desses materiais. Presentemente, tem também estudado o efeito de campos aplicados em lâminas nemáticas por simulações de Monte Carlo.
