João Ribeiro Parente, nasceu em Águas Santas, freguesia de São Tomé do Castelo, Vila Real, em 13 de maio de 1932. Completou o curso de Teologia no Seminário de Vila Real em 1957 e, mais tarde, licenciou-se em Teologia na Universidade Católica do Porto. Com excepção de dois anos em que foi prefeito e professor no Seminário Diocesano de Vila Real, foi pároco na Diocese e professor.
