Foi professor catedrático (convidado) na Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. Foi o primeiro regente da cadeira de Geriatria da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. Foi fundador da unidade universitária de Geriatria da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. Foi diretor do Serviço de Medicina do Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Norte, EPE – Hospital Pulido Valente. Fundador e presidente da direção da Associação dos Médicos dos Idosos Institucionalizados. Foi fundador e coordenador do Núcleo de Estudos de Geriatria da Sociedade Portuguesa de Medicina Interna. Foi membro da European Academy for Medicine of Ageing. Foi membro do conselho da Geriatric Section of the Union European Medical Specialists. Foi membro do conselho da European Union Geriatric Medicine Society. Foi coordenador do Grupo de Estudos de Cardiologia Geriátrica da Sociedade Portuguesa de Cardiologia.
