João Gomes-Pedro

João Gomes-Pedro is a retired Full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and former director of the Child and Family Department at Santa Maria Hospital. Beyond clinical and academic pediatrics, he championed a cause – that of the child – defending the conditions and needs essential to their well-being and development. At the Faculty of Medicine, he fought for modernity and pedagogical innovation. His pedagogical work extended to other faculties, such as the Faculty of Arts and Psychology at the University of Lisbon. He is a professor. trainer from the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS). Physician, pediatrician, educator, scientist, and organizer. He has received numerous accolades, awards, and decorations, most notably being awarded the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator and Grand Officer of the Order of Merit by the President of the Portuguese Republic. In 2010, he co-founded, with Berry Brazelton, the Gomes-Pedro Foundation for Infant and Family Sciences, which has already trained hundreds of professionals in health, education and social services, enabling the shared mission of defending and committing to building a Culture of Childhood.
