Romancista, dramaturgo e biógrafo é sobretudo conhecido como crítico literário. Fundador de algumas revistas literárias de grande importância no panorama artístico português. Bibliotecário da Biblioteca da Imprensa Nacional desde 1935, fundou e dirigiu, na sua 1ª fase, a Portugália Editora. Preparou para a imprensa, com a edição dos primeiros 4 volumes das "Obras Completas" de Fernando Pessoa.
