O seu caminho na saúde infantil começou em 2009. Depois da fase inicial de especialização em pediatria, seguiram-se anos de trabalho junto das crianças e das suas famílias no contexto mais adverso possível: o Serviço de Urgência hospitalar. Desde 2015 que participa no Transporte Pediátrico Inter-Hospitalar Sul, responsável pelo transporte de doente crítico (neonatal e pediátrico) a Sul de Lisboa. Desde 2019 que trabalha na Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos do Hospital D. Estefânia.
Da Amadora para S. Tomé e Príncipe, de Ponta Delgada até ao Centro de Lisboa, teve o privilégio de contactar com crianças e famílias de todas as proveniências e credos. Dessa experiência, surgiu o sítio www.pediatrajoanamartins.com, com informação sobre saúde infantil gratuita, simples e fácil de consultar.
