Jim Powell nasceu em Londres em 1949 e estudou em Cambridge, onde tirou um mestrado em história. Começou por trabalhar em publicidade chegando a ser director executivo de uma importante agência londrina. Fez parte da lista do Partido Conservador, liderado por Margareth Thatcher nas eleições gerais de 1987. O seu primeiro romance O Partir dos Ovos foi nomeado para o Desmond Elliot Prize. Jim Powell vive em Northamptonshire.
