Jesús Zárate nasceu na Colômbia em 1915. Iniciou-se muito cedo no jornalismo, acabando por se dedicar à diplomacia. A sua obra literária abrange peças de teatro, contos, ensaios e dois romances - A Prisão e O Carteiro, ambos editados a título póstumo.
Em 1972 recebeu o Prémio Planeta, atribuído pela primeira vez a título póstumo e a um escritor latino-americano. Aquando da sua publicação, A Prisão vendeu mais de 50 mil exemplares logo na primeira semana.
