Jean-Jacques Hublin é um dos melhores especialistas da evolução dos homens. Depois de ter sido director de uma equipa de investigação no CNRS, ele ensinou Paleontologia na Universidade de Bordéus, bem como em outras universidades dos EUA. Em 2004 fundou, no Instituto de Antropologia Evolutiva Max Planch de Leipzig (Alemanha), o departamento de Evolução dos Homens, do qual é director.
