James Thompson, nascido e criado no Kentucky, vive na Finlândia há dez anos e reside atualmente em Helsínquia com a mulher. Antes de se tornar escritor a tempo inteiro, estudou Sueco e Finlandês e trabalhou como barman, segurança, operário da construção civil,fotógrafo, negociante de moedas raras e soldado.
