James Rhodes nasceu em Londres em 1975. Com dezoito anos foi-lhe concedida uma bolsa para estudar na Guildhall School of Music and Drama, mas decidiu estudar na Universidade de Edimburgo. Ao fim de um ano, desistiu da universidade e deixou de tocar piano. Trabalhou um ano num restaurante de fast food em Paris e depois regressou a Londres, onde estudou Psicologia na University College London. Trabalhou vários anos em Londres, até ser internado com um esgotamento nervoso. Acabou por regressar à música e, hoje em dia, é um aclamado pianista, além de escritor e apresentador de televisão.
