J. M. Queiroz Velloso
José Maria de Queiroz Velloso (1860-1952), trained in Medicine, pursued a career in teaching, becoming a professor at the Higher Course of Letters and later vice-rector of the University of Lisbon. While still a student, he began contributing to various periodicals and participated in the literary gatherings then existing in the city of Porto. Abandoning medicine, he also dedicated himself to journalism, having collaborated with... The New Leaf, The Provincethe Newsthe Reporter and the TimeHe also took an interest in politics, being elected deputy to the Cortes of the Portuguese Constitutional Monarchy on the lists of the Regenerator Party. He began his teaching career in 1896 in the faculty of the Évora Lyceum, assuming the positions of director of the Primary Teacher Training School and the Public Library. In 1902, he was put in charge of the chair of History of Pedagogy at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. He was appointed director of the Higher Course of Letters in 1910, a position he maintained after the republican reform of 1911. On April 3, 1920, he was awarded the rank of Grand Officer of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword. He retired in 1930, at the age of 70, dedicating himself afterwards to intense historiographical research.
