J. Filipe Monteiro é médico pneumologista. Desempenhou as funções de assistente hospitalar no Hospital de Santa Maria, onde exerceu, entre outros, o cargo de coordenador da Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos Respiratórios e da Consulta Externa de Pneumologia Geral. Foi ainda assistente convidado da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa. Colaborou em vários livros de texto na área da patologia respiratória. Autor de inúmeros trabalhos de investigação no âmbito da pneumologia geral e problemas éticos do fim da vida, publicados em Portugal e no estrangeiro.
