J.A. Santos Varela

O autor viveu e trabalhou no Alentejo entre 1951 e 1963. É engenheiro-agrónomo (ISA/UTL) e Doutorado em Ciências do Ambiente - Ordenamento do Território (FCT/UN L). Foi chefe da divisão do Planeamento Regional no Departamento Central do Planeamento. Em 1974 foi requisitado pelo Secretário de Estado da Agricultura, como seu adjunto no Gabinete. Permaneceu no Gabinete Ministeral ate 1977, no decurso da, então, Reforma Agrária. Em 1978 foi nomeado Director - Geral do Planeamento, do Ministério da Agricultura, na Comissão da Integração Europeia, durante as Negociações para a adesão à então CEE - Comunidade Económica Europeia (1979/1986).
Tem publicado vários livros sobre a Política Agrícola Comum e sobre o Desenvolvimento Rural.
