Ivan Chmeliov nasceu em 1873 em Moscovo, onde se formou em Direito. Começou a publicar as suas primeiras obras aos 24 anos.
Em 1918, instalou-se na Crimeia, onde viveu até emigrar em 1922. Foi um período de fome, humilhação e desespero.
Em 1920, o filho único do escritor, ex-oficial ferido do Exército Branco, foi preso no hospital e fuzilado.
Ivan Chmeliov faleceu em 1950.
