Isabel Santos, bióloga, foi professora catedrática da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto e investigadora (group leader) do Instituto de Biologia Molecular e Celular. Os seus interesses científicos incidiram na ultraestrutura celular, desenvolvendo, ainda, trabalhos sobre biotecnologia nas suas vertentes de fisiologia vegetal sobre o efeito e adaptações a situações de stresses bióticos e abióticos, bem como diferenciação e desenvolvimento celulares, utilizando culturas de tecidos vegetais e técnicas moleculares. Foi responsável por vários projetos de investigação, alguns em colaboração com universidades estrangeiras.
