Isabel Maria Caetano Leiria nasceu em Pernes (Santarém) em 29 de julho de 1951 e morreu em Sintra em 9 de novembro de 2020. Foi professora da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, onde se doutorou em Linguística Portuguesa com a tese "Léxico: aquisição e ensino do português europeu língua não materna" (Gulbenkian, 2006).
