Dois dos romances de Howard Norman, The Northern Lights (1987) e The Bird Artist (1994), foram nomeados para o National Book Award. Norman recebeu um Lannan Award em ficção e dá aulas na University of Maryland.
Nascido em Toledo, Ohio, cedo mudou para o Canadá, onde ganhou notoriedade como escritor.
