Herman Van Rompuy
Herman Achille Van Rompuy (Etterbeek, October 31, 1947) is a Belgian politician, former president of the lower house of the country's Parliament and former Prime Minister of Belgium. He is the current and first President of the European Council. Before assuming the presidency of the European Council on January 1, 2010, Van Rompuy held the position of Prime Minister of Belgium, and he resigned to take up the new post on November 19, 2009, in Brussels.
When he was Prime Minister, he was invited to take office by King Albert II of Belgium on December 28, 2008, replacing Yves Leterme, who resigned on December 22. Van Rompuy assumed office on December 30, 2008.
He was elected the first President of the European Council on 19 November 2009, in accordance with the Treaty of Lisbon.2 He was replaced by Yves Leterme on 25 November 2009.
