Helder Macedo é autor de seis livros de poesia e de seis romances, traduzidos em várias línguas. É também autor de uma vasta obra ensaística. Reside em Londres, onde foi Camoens Professor of Portuguese e é Emeritus Professor no King’s College. Foi professor visitante em várias universidades, entre as quais Harvard, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales e Universidade de Santiago de Compostela.
Em Portugal foi secretário de Estado da Cultura no governo de Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo. Em 2024 foi distinguido com o Prémio Vasco Graça Moura-Cidadania Cultural.
