George Collingridge (1847-1931) nasceu em Oxfordshire, Inglaterra. Em 1879 migrou para a Austrália. Aí fundou a Sociedade Real de Arte de Nova Gales do Sul. Após a publicação da sua obra A Descoberta da Austrália foi reconhecido pelos membros da Royal Geographical Society como "uma autoridade em questões geográficas". Em 1908 foi distinguido como Cavaleiro Comandante da Ordem de Santiago pelo Rei de Portugal.
