Gary Larson, criador do cartune fenomenalmente bem-sucedido The Far Side®, passou a infância em Tacoma, Washington. Em criança, gostava de desenhar, mas nunca estudou arte nem pensou vir a ser cartunista. O seu verdadeiro amor era a biologia, que acabou por se tornar assunto frequente dos seus desenhos.

A comunidade científica prestou homenagem a Larson atribuindo o seu nome a um piolho e a uma borboleta.
