Como muitos escritores portugueses, Gabriel Magalhães tem três vidas. Na primeira, é professor de Literatura na Universidade da Beira Interior, tendo também dado aulas em Espanha - país onde viveu muitos anos e onde fez o seu doutoramento. Na segunda, acorda de madrugada e escreve contos e romances - como quem tenta passar a limpo o amanhecer. A sua terceira vida é um quadro de Vermeer onde se vê uma mulher e uma filha - e a certeza da luz de Deus. Depois de publicar o seu primeiro romance descobriu que, para além destas três, precisa ainda de mais quatro existências: sete vidas são precisas para sobreviver aos abismos de uma aventura literária.
