Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin nasceu em Lauffen, na Alemanha, a 20 de março de 1770. Um dos maiores poetas românticos da língua germânica, Hölderlin travou amizade com as principais figuras do seu tempo, Schelling e Hegel, com quem irá redigir, mais tarde, o célebre O mais antigo programa do idealismo alemão. No seu Hipérion ou o Eremita da Grécia (1797-1799), um romance epistolar em dois volumes, e nos seus Poemas (1826), deixou uma profunda reflexão sobre o exílio, o sublime e o mundo natural, incorporando na língua alemã a sintaxe do grego clássico e a sua complexa mitologia. Desde cedo marcado por uma perturbação mental, Hölderlin passará o final da vida em reclusão na famosa Torre de Tübingen, onde produz os seus «poemas da loucura», até aí morrer, no dia 7 de junho de 1843.
