Fred Vargas, pseudónimo de Frédérique Audouin-Rouzeau, nasceu em Paris em 1957. Estudou História e Arqueologia e publicou vários romances policiais que estão traduzidos em trinta e cinco países.
É unanimemente reconhecida como a rainha francesa do polar e os seus livros foram galardoados com numerosos prémios, entre os quais o Prix Mystère de la Critique (1996 e 2000), o Grande Prémio de Novela Negra do Festival de Cognac (1999), o Trofeo 813, o Giallo Grinzane (2006) e o CWA International Dagger (2006, 2007 e 2009).
Só em França, as suas obras venderam já mais de cinco milhões de exemplares.
