Franz Metcalf earned his master's degree in Postgraduate Theological Union He earned his doctorate from the University of Chicago with a dissertation on the question: "Why do Americans practice Zen Buddhism?"
He currently works at Forge Institute for Spirituality and Social Change, is vice-president of the commission of Person, Culture, and Religion Group from the American Academy of Religion He teaches at a college in Los Angeles.
