Françoise Chandernagor nasceu numa família de maçons da Creuse cruzados com descendentes de um escravo indiano.
Após um começo de carreira nas altas magistraturas do Estado, dedicou integralmente a sua vida à escrita, a partir de 1993.
O seu primeiro romance, A alameda do rei (1981), atingiu 600 000 exemplares de vendas em França e foi traduzido em todo o mundo.
É, desde 1995, membro da Academia Goncourt, presidindo atualmente ao júri do Prémio Goncourt.
