François Furet nasceu em Paris em 1927 e faleceu em 1997. Foi um historiador e académico francês. Participou na Resistência Francesa e pertenceu ao partido Comunista entre 1947 e 1956, ano em que entrou para o CNRS onde inicia os seus estudos sobre a Revolução Francesa. Em 1960 vai para a Escola de Altos Estudos em Ciências Sociais onde conduzirá a maior parte da sua carreira, e da qual foi presidente entre 1977 e 1985. Nesse ano parte para os EUA para ensinar, nomeadamente em Chicago. Mais tarde recebe um doutoramento Honoris Causa pela Universidade de Harvard. Ao longo da sua vida, recebeu vários prémios pela sua carreira.
