Frances Hodgson Burnett

Frances Hodgson Burnett was born on November 24, 1849, in Manchester, England. The premature death of her father led Frances, along with her mother and four sisters, to move to Tennessee, in the United States of America, in search of better living conditions. Frances was only eighteen years old when she submitted a story of hers to a popular literary magazine, thus beginning an auspicious career as a writer. In 1873, she married an American doctor, moving with him, a few years later, to Washington. Among her works are The Little Princess and The Little Lord, but it was with The Secret Garden that she became known worldwide. Frances Hodgson Burnett spent much of her life between England and the United States, where she died on October 29, 1924.
