Fernando Venâncio ((18 de novembro de 1944, Mértola – 30 de maio de 2025, Mértola) inaugurou a sua carreira linguística aos dois anos, quando passou do aconchego alentejano para a capital, extasiando-se com os modos de exprimir-se dos lisboetas. Aos dez anos, novo êxtase o esperava, agora em Braga, essa herdeira do território criador do idioma, e orgulhosa disso até à intolerância. Em 1970, quando Portugal se tinha tornado num fascinante mapa de falares, sotaques e soluções gramaticais, vai instalar-se num mundo inteiramente outro, o de língua neerlandesa. Aí se forma, em Amesterdão, em Linguística Geral, iniciando também a docência universitária em língua e cultura portuguesas: primeiro em Nimega, depois em Utreque, finalmente, e de novo, na capital holandesa. Nunca deixaram de inquietá-lo as formas e as estruturas da sua língua materna, e também os processos históricos na origem delas.
