Fernando Morais nasceu em Mariana, Minas Gerais, em 1946.
Trabalhou no Jornal da Tarde, na revista Veja e em várias outras publicações da imprensa brasileira.
Recebeu três vezes o Prémio Esso e quatro vezes o Prémio Abril de jornalismo.
Foi deputado (1979-1987) e secretário da Cultura (1988 1991) e da Educação (1991-1993) do Estado de São Paulo.
Autor de vários livros, estreou-se na reportagem literária com A Ilha, em 1976, relato de uma viagem a Cuba, que se tornou um dos maiores sucessos de vendas no Brasil.
Pelo livro Corações Sujos, recebeu, em 2001, o Prémio Jabuti e a distinção de melhor livro do ano na categoria de não ficção.
