Nasceu em Luanda, Angola, em 1959. Licenciado (1983) e doutorado (2001) em Sociologia pelo ISCTE-IUL, é Professor Associado do Departamento de Sociologia e investigador do Centro de Investigação e Estudos de Sociologia (CIES-IUL). Foi Vice-Reitor da Investigação do ISCTE-IUL (2014-2018); membro do Conselho Geral da mesma instituição (2013-2018); diretor do CIES-IUL (2006-2014); e diretor do Doutoramento em Sociologia do ISCTE-IUL (2011-2014). Fundou e foi o primeiro diretor da Editora Mundos Sociais (2010-2014).
