Nasceu em Cadiz em 1960 e é autor de uma obra versátil que abarca a poesia, a novela, o relato, o ensaio e os artigos de opinião. Publicou El Equipaje Abierto, Sombras particulares e Trama de Niebla, e os contos Un Mundo Peligroso e Lo Que Viene Despues de lo Peor, entre muitos outros.
São elementos recorrentes na sua obra, a neve a infância e a nostalgia, evidenciando o efémero da vida, a rápida passagem do tempo e a insignificância do ser humano na imensidão do universo.
Recebeu o Prémio Nadal de Novela 2007, o Prémio Nacional de Poesia de Espana 1996, o Prémio de la Critica de Poesia Castellana 1995, o Prémio Ateneo de Sevilla e o Prémio Internacional de Poesia Fundacion Loewe 1992.
Os seus livros estão traduzidos em inglês, italiano, russo, francês, romeno e português.
