Ernest Renan (1823–1892) foi um dos mais importantes escritores, historiadores e filólogos franceses do século XIX. Depois de ter frequentado o seminário e de ter recebido as «ordens menores», viveu uma crise de fé que o levou a abandonar a Igreja. Formou-se em Filosofia e tornou-se um racionalista radical.
