É autor de mais de 25 livros, traduzidos em 16 idiomas e publicados em 42 países. O seu livro Os Espiões do Papa foi incluído na biblioteca de estudos sobre serviços secretos da CIA, em Langley. Em 2013 recebeu o Prémio Nacional de Investigação Jornalística da revista italiana Terra Incognita pela sua investigação do caso Vatileaks, que serviu de base ao livro Os Abutres do Vaticano, e em julho do mesmo ano foi distinguido com o Prémio Anual Strillaerischia (Itália) para o Melhor Enviado Especial pelo seu trabalho no Afeganistão. Foi produtor de documentários para o Discovery Channel e o National Geographic.
