Eric Dunning
Eric Dunning (1936-2019) became known for his efforts in the academic institutionalization of the sociology of sport. A disciple and colleague of Norbert Elias, he led a group of researchers at the University of Leicester who adapted the theory of the civilizing process to a body of work on the development of modern sport in England. Among his works, those that analyzed the origin and maintenance of forms of violence in sporting events stand out.
