Nasceu em Castel Boglione, em Itália, a 3 de março de 1943. É o fundador e prior da Comunidade Monástica de Bose. Formou-se em Economia na Universidade de Turim e é autor de vários livros sobre espiritualidade e tradição de diálogo da Igreja com o mundo cristão contemporâneo. Em Itália, escreve para La Stampa e, em França, para La Croix, sendo os seus livros editados pela conceituada Einaudi. Fé, esperança, ética e perdão são alguns dos seus temas fundamentais. O Papa Francisco nomeou-o consultor pontifício do Conselho para a Promoção da Unidade dos Cristãos.
