Elaine Sanceau, escritora inglesa de origem francesa, nasceu em Croydon em 1896. Viveu na Suíça e no Brasil. Em 1930, fixou-se no Porto e dedicou-se ao estudo das grandes figuras da nossa História, da qual se tornou especialista. É autora, entre outras, das seguintes obras: D. Henrique, o Navegador, Afonso de Albuquerque, D. João de Castro, A Viagem de Vasco da Gama, D. João II, Capitães do Brasil. Em 1979, postumamente, foi editado o seu estudo Mulheres Portuguesas no Ultramar. Era oficial da Ordem de Santiago da Espada e da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique, membro do Instituto de Coimbra e do Centro de Estudos Históricos Ultramarinos e sócio correspondente da Academia Internacional da Cultura Portuguesa. Em outubro de 1953, foi-lhe atribuída uma bolsa de estudo para visitar as antigas fortalezas portuguesas de Ceuta, Arzila e Tânger. Em 1968 recebeu a Medalha de Ouro da Cidade do Porto, cidade onde faleceu em 1978.
