Drauzio Varella nasceu em S. Paulo, em 1943. Formado em Medicina pela Universidade de São Paulo, trabalhou durante vinte anos no Hospital do Câncer. Foi voluntário na Casa de Detenção de São Paulo (Carandiru) durante treze anos e actualmente dá consultas na Penitenciária Feminina da Capital.
O seu livro Estação Carandiru ganhou os prémios de Jabuti Não Ficção e Livro do Ano. Publicou ainda Por Um Fio e Borboletas da Alma, além das obras infantis Nas Ruas do Brás (vencedora do Prémio Novos Horizontes, da Bienal de Bolonha, bem como do Prémio Revelação Infantil, da Bienal do Rio de Janeiro), De Braços para o Alto e Macacos.
Actualmente dirige um projecto de plantas medicinais amazónicas.
