Atul Gawande foi Administrador para a Saúde Global da Agência Norte-Americana para o Desenvolvimento Internacional (USAID) entre 2022 e 2025. É um prestigiado cirurgião, escritor e investigador. Exerceu cirurgia geral e endócrina no Brigham and Women's Hospital e foi professor na Faculdade de Medicina e na Faculdade T.H. Chan de Saúde Pública da Universidade de Harvard. Durante anos escreveu sobre saúde na revista The New Yorker e é autor de quatro bestsellers internacionais: A Mão Que Nos Opera, Ser Bom Não Chega, O Efeito Checklist e Ser Mortal.
Membro da Academia Nacional de Medicina, recebeu vários prémios, foi bolseiro da Rhodes (a mais antiga e prestigiada bolsa do mundo), e foi distinguido, ainda, com o MacArthur Fellowship (popularmente conhecido como "o prémio dos génios").
