O romance de estreia de Debra Jo Immergut, A Reclusa, foi vendido para mais de 12 países. Debra publicou um livro de ficção curta, Propriedade Privada, e algumas histórias na American Short Fiction e na revista, em língua russa, Foreign Literature. Anteriormente, trabalhou como editora de uma revista, foi colaboradora frequente do Wall Street Journal e do Boston Globe e ensinou Redação nas universidades de Iowa e Maryland, além de o fazer também em bibliotecas e prisões. Recebeu uma bolsa da Residência Artística MacDowell e uma bolsa da Residência Literária Michener e possui um Master of Fine Arts do Iowa Writter’s Workshop.
