David Liss é licenciado em Literatura Inglesa pela universidade de Columbia. O Mercador Português é o seu segundo romance, depois do sucesso de A Conspiração de Papel. Ambos os romances históricos arrebataram a crítica e venceram diversos prémios, entre eles o Edgar, o Barry e o Macavity. O seu terceiro romance histórico, O Grande Conspirador, tornou-se um best-seller, e David Liss retomou a personagem de Benjamin Weaver, em 2009, com A Companhia do Diabo. O autor vive com a sua mulher e filha em San Antonio, EUA, onde já escreveu outros romances igualmente aclamados pela crítica.
