Daša Drndic (1946-2018) nasceu em Zagreb, na atual Croácia, então parte da República Federal da Jugoslávia. Licenciou-se na Universidade de Belgrado, na Sérvia, foi tradutora e professora universitária no Canadá e na Universidade de Rijeka, na Croácia, onde se doutorou. O seu romance Belladonna venceu em 2018 o Prémio Warwick e foi finalista do Prémio Literário do Banco Europeu para a Reconstrução e Desenvolvimento. Em 2019, já postumamente, o jornal britânico The Guardian distinguiu-a como um dos dez nomes a marcar a nova literatura europeia.
