Craig Russell nasceu na Escócia e foi polícia, publicitário e diretor criativo. É autor da série best-seller de Jan Fabel, passada em Hamburgo e publicada em vinte e três línguas. Em 2007, recebeu o prestigiado Polizeistern (Estrela da Polícia) da polícia de Hamburgo, tendo sido assim o único cidadão não-alemão a recebê-lo. Em 2008, venceu o CWA Duncan Lawrie Golden Dagger, o maior prémio literário para autores de crime. Vive em Perthshire com a mulher e os dois filhos.
