Charles Haanel nasceu a 22 de maio de 1866 no Michigan, Estados Unidos da América. Foi um empresário de sucesso e pertenceu à Liga Científica Americana, à Liga do Autor da América, à Sociedade Americana de Pesquisa Psíquica, à Sociedade Humanitária de St. Louis e à Câmara de Comércio de St. Louis. Autor notável, publicou várias obras, sendo o Manual para o Caminho Espiritual a sua grande obra-prima. Haanel praticava os princípios que defendia, conquistando o seu próprio sucesso pessoal e profissional. Em 1919, Napoleon Hill escreveu a Haanel uma carta, agradecendo-lhe pelo livro: «O meu atual sucesso e o sucesso que se seguiu ao meu trabalho, enquanto presidente do Napoleon Hill Institute, devem-se em grande parte aos princípios estabelecidos nesta obra.»
