Catherine Cookson viveu em Northumberland, em Inglaterra, cenário de muitos dos seus bestsellers. Começou a escrever como forma de terapia, e é considerada ainda hoje uma das autoras contemporâneas mais populares da língua inglesa. Dedicava-se à pintura com igual fervor. Depois de ser nomeada Oficial da Ordem do Império Britânico (OBE) em 1985, foi nomeada Dama do Império Britânico em 1993. Faleceu pouco antes do seu nonagésimo segundo aniversário, tendo escrito mais de 104 obras e vendido cerca de 130 milhões de exemplares em todo o mundo.
