Carolyn Keene

Carolyn Keene was the pseudonym used by the various authors of the Nancy Drew series, originally created by Edward Stratemeyer, founder of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, a publishing company, in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Stratemeyer hired writers to write the manuscripts of Nancy Drew's adventures, paying them $125 in exchange for the rights to the work and a guarantee of confidentiality.

The first author behind this collection was Mildred Wirt Benson. Later, after Edward Stratemeyer's departure, the original books were rewritten by his daughter, Harriet Adams, who also added new titles to the collection. Mildred Wirt Benson (1905-2002) was a journalist and wrote under the pseudonym Carolyn Keene between 1929 and 1947.
