Carmen Dolores
He was born on April 22, 1924, in Lisbon. At the age of 14, he made his debut on the radio, where he later maintained an intense activity, namely in poetry dissemination programs. She appeared for the first time in the film Amor de perdição (1943), directed by António Lopes Ribeiro, playing the role of Teresa. Her appearance on stage took place in 1945, in the play Electra, by Jean Giraudoux, at the Companhia dos Comediantes de Lisboa. He then moved to the Teatro Nacional (Companhia Amélia Rey Colaço-Robles Monteiro), where he remained for eight years, having worked at the Teatro de Sempre, by Gino Saviotti, and the Teatro Nacional Popular. In the early 60s, he founded, with Armando Cortez, Fernando Gusmão and Rogério Paulo, the Teatro Moderno de Lisboa. On television, he participated in plays such as Turgenev's A Month in the Field, Frei Luís de Sousa, Almeida Garrett's, Mihura's Bela Doroteia, Lady Windermer's The Fan and, Wilde's, Casona's The Lady of the White Hands, and Larreta's João Palmieri. His name is linked to some of the successes of the House of Comedy: The Dance of Death, by Strindberg, Play Strindberg, by Dürrenmatt, Alice in the Luxembourg Gardens, by Weingarten, and The Forge, by Alves Redol. After 1974, he participated in Espingardas da mãe Carrar and O círculo de giz caucasiano, by Bertolt Brecht, directed by João Lourenço. In 1983, he performed at Teatro Aberto Comédia à moda antiga, by Arbuzov, and Confessions on a summer terrace, by Strindberg, staged by Mário Viegas. In 1985, she was part of the cast of Virginia, a play by Edna O'Brien directed by Carlos Avilez. For her performance as Dona Otília, in the film Balada da praia dos cãos, by José Fonseca e Costa, she received several film trophies from national magazines in 1987. In 1988, she was the protagonist in the Portuguese telenovela Passerelle and, in the same year, in the film A mulher do próximo, by José Fonseca e Costa. In 1991, she returned to the theater, where she performed Balanceada, by Samuel Beckett, staged by Mário Viegas, and, in 1992, the play Spectres, by Ibsen, directed by Carlos Avilez. In 1993, he collaborated in the television series A viúva do hangado, directed by Walter Avancini, and in the telenovela Pátio da Fama. After a long hiatus, she returned in 1999 to television performances, starring in the telenovela A lenda da garça.
On May 15, 2005, he performed for the last time in the play Copenhagen, directed by João Lourenço, a show that marks his retirement from the stage and television after a 60-year career. She was then decorated by the President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio with the degree of Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique. She is the author of the memoir Retrato inacabado (O Jornal, 1984), and co-author, with Tito Lívio, of the work Teatro Moderno de Lisboa – 1961-1965 – Um marco na história do teatro português (Caminho, 2009).
